Skydiving in Galveston

We just got back from a week at the beach, and we had the best time! This was our first proper family vacation together, and we wanted to share some of our favorite memories with you.

Katherine and her family vacationed in Galveston, TX, last year, and they loved it so much that they decided to go back! This year, they decided to invite Devon along for the ride. So on Sunday morning, we headed out on the all-day drive along with Katherine’s parents, her brothers, and her grandparents. We decided to take our own car, so we jammed out in Devon’s car the whole way. (Katherine may have snuck in a nap or two.)

When we got to Galveston, we checked out the house we’d be staying in. Katherine’s dad booked a beautiful townhouse right by the beach with plenty of space for everyone to rest and enjoy time together. We settled in and grabbed dinner with the family at Texas Pit Stop BBQ, a restaurant Katherine’s been looking forward to returning to ever since last summer. And after dinner, we drove around the island a little bit and grabbed dessert at Ben and Jerry’s, Devon’s favorite ice cream shop.

Monday was all about exploring Galveston. We drove up and down the coastline to see what we could find. We saw the cruise ships setting sail at the top the island. We walked through the historic downtown area with all of its neat little shops. And we rode the ferry over to the mainland and back so many times that we lost count. It was a fun, low-key day with no agenda or destination, and it was a great way to start off our time in Galveston.

We’re both thrill junkies, so we wanted to go parasailing on Tuesday, but we were disappointed to find out that parasailing season doesn’t start until June. We didn’t let that ruin our fun, though. We stumbled upon a surprisingly fancy pho restaurant and went on a dolphin tour in the harbor. 🐬 Dolphins are Devon’s favorite animals, so he was excited to see so many of them swimming around and playing. We even got to see a baby dolphin swimming with his mom! Not a bad way to spend the day.

On Wednesday, we went with Katherine’s stepmom and brothers to see the aquarium at Moody Gardens. It was really nice. I think our favorite part by far was the penguin exhibit. After some time at the beach that evening, we snuck off for round two at Pit Stop BBQ and baked some cookies back at the beach house. Because we eat what we want on vacation.

The main event of the whole trip took place on Thursday: skydiving. We warmed up with a little bit of fun at a theme park over the ocean called Pleasure Pier, and then we headed to pickup point for our big jump. Katherine did it last year and loved it so much that she just had to do it again. She wasn’t nervous at all. One might even say she was giddy. Devon was a little more hesitant, but excited nonetheless.

We got on a little plane, we flew up 14,000 feet in the air, and then we jumped out just for fun. It was a tandem jump, so we were each strapped to a professional skydiver. Our free fall was over the ocean, and then we pulled our chutes and floated down to land on the beach. It was an incredible experience for both of us, and we can’t wait to do it again the next time the opportunity arises.

For our last night in Galveston, we ate BBQ (this time at Queen’s BBQ downtown) and rode the ferry one last time. Then we headed home to rest up before our big drive the next day. We’re both a couple of homebodies, but neither of us was ready to come home from this trip. It was such a relaxing, fun time, exactly what we needed in the midst of wedding-planning and house-building. We couldn’t have asked for a better first family vacation together, and we’re excited for our next big trip!
