We're Building a House!

Wedding planning is well under way! But in the midst of all of that preparation, we have’t forgotten that we have a whole life to plan after that day, too. Several of you have asked us where we plan on living once we get married, and our answer has been pretty consistent: “We’re figuring that out.” Today’s news is that we aren’t figuring it out anymore because we’ve got it nailed down, and it’s pretty awesome.

After we get married, we’re going to live in our own house that we’re having built just for us! We’ll be living in Greenwood, Devon’s hometown, in a neighborhood called The Oaks. It’s a brand-new neighborhood in the middle of town, just a few minutes from our families and the perfect distance from work. It’s quiet, classy, and family-friendly, exactly the kind of place we want to live.

We’ve had the dream of building our own house for a long time. When Devon moved back from Texas to work at the church, he chose to live with family instead of getting his own place so that he could start saving to buy a house when the right person came along. (Spoiler alert: It was Katherine, and she did come along quite soon.) And when we first started dating, we drove through The Oaks to look at Christmas lights and fell in love with the place. Since then, it’s been our goal to live there.

On a drive through the neighborhood a few months ago, we caught eye of a beautiful blue house that was being built. We started coming by every few days to see the progress and even took a peek inside before they finished up. The blue house became pretty much all we could talk about, so we contacted the realtor to see if it was available. It turned out that it was already sold (and also way out of our price range), but it started a conversation with the company that eventually led to our decision to build.

Even before the plans for our proposal and engagement were set in stone, Devon started the process of getting approved to build a house that would one day become our home. It’s taken a bit of time and patience, but this week, we got word that the application has been accepted! And after all that waiting, we aren’t wasting any time.

We already had the floorplan in mind based on our love of the blue house and what we learned from looking at a couple of similar models. Ours will be a happy medium size, not nearly as big as the house that started all of this, but not as small as we thought we’d have to go, either. We picked out a lot that’s the perfect size for what we want to build, and it has an incredible space for a backyard. We even have an address! It’s off to an incredible start.

Now, we’re hashing out the nitty-gritty details and waiting for building to begin. The plan is to close sometime in September, well before our wedding date. We know where we’re going to live when it’s all said and done, and we can’t think of anywhere better! We’re very excited to have this process started, and we’ll be sure to keep you posted on the house’s progress as it’s being built.

Thanks for reading, friends! We’re on vacation in Galveston next week, but we’ll be back soon to keep you posted on all of the exciting stuff that’s going on. We hope you enjoy staying in the loop.
